2015-16 Academic Year

Date: September 16, 2015 – June 17, 2016

Time: 2:30 pm – 5:45 pm

Homework Help:

Our experienced staff ensures students keep up with their class work.  It is important that students learn and understand concepts taught in class and are not simply fed answers.  Our low student to staff ratio ensures that individualized assistance is available so that students are able to receive guidance on difficult and struggling content.

Test Preparation:

ISS’s test preparation program reviews and teaches material that will be covered in upcoming exams.  While it is important for students to learn the material from class, our test preparation program emphasizes reinforcing a student’s ability to recall information on test day.

Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM):

PS 42’s lessons are adapted through the New York State Common Core Curriculum.  Students engage in hands-on, engaging experiments to teach the real world applications of scientific concepts.  In small groups, students are encouraged to question how things work, collaborate with each other, and explore the world around them while having fun.  Students learn about the scientific method, practice applying prior knowledge to new concepts, and how to properly gather relevant information.  Students use technology to assist them in designing rockets and visualizing various engineering projects, allowing students to bridge the divide in learning concepts in class and being able to see and engage in the real world application of those concepts.

Art Literacy:

Themed Lessons according to NYS Reading Standards for different grade levels. Students are exposed to a variety of texts both fiction and non-fiction through guided instruction. Students are given the opportunity to have whole class discussion and turn and talks. Students learn about the history . As a culminating activity, students create their own arts and crafts project in relation to the topic taught.

Students expand their knowledge of musical concepts such as rhythm and tempo while learning to dance.  During this time students are able to express their creativity, and practice working as a team by collaboratively deriving dance moves that are unique to themselves.  By collaborating with each other, students build community and friendships that will last for years to come.
