2024-25 AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS ASSISTANT GROUP LEADER

Immigrant Social Services, Inc. (ISS) seeks enthusiastic and dedicated Afterschool Programs Assistant Group Leaders to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about working with children and are eager to gain experience in a supportive and nurturing environment. As an Assistant Group Leader, you will help create a positive, engaging, and safe space for children to learn and play for participants (Pre-K through 8th Grade) in our afterschool programs.

The ideal candidate is committed to nurturing children and youth through positive youth development and the whole-child approach. While previous formal experience working with children/youth is not required, a willingness to learn and a passion for working with young people is essential and any experience in babysitting, tutoring, or volunteering with youth is beneficial.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Assist the Group Leader in planning and implementing a variety of enrichment activities and/or theme-based projects that are engaging, purposeful, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with our program. These will include existing ISS-developed curricula and lesson ideas as well as group leader-developed activities. Training, guidance, and assessment will be provided.

Work under the guidance of the Group Leader and program site leadership staff to gain experience and develop skills in youth work.

Supervise and engage with children during activities, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Assist students with their homework.

Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and respected.

Support the Group Leader in maintaining a clean and organized environment.

Help manage the daily schedule, including transitions between activities and meal times.

Encourage positive behavior and help resolve conflicts in a gentle and constructive manner.

Proactively communicate regularly with program site leadership staff about any issues, including but not limited to behavioral challenges, scheduling, and curricula.

Participate in team meetings and training sessions to continually improve skills and knowledge.

Location: Our afterschool programs operate at public school sites in the Lower East Side/Chinatown neighborhood.

Compensation:

$16.00 per hour

This is a part-time/contract position for the 2024-25 school year that follows the NYC DOE academic calendar.  Must be available during afterschool hours, Monday–Friday, 2:00 pm/2:30 pm – 5:45 pm/6:00 pm (start and end times depend on location). Flexible days, but five days a week is preferred. Must be available for orientation in late August or early September 2024.

2024-25 AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS GROUP LEADER 

Immigrant Social Services, Inc. (ISS) seeks motivated, enthusiastic, creative, and reliable individuals with a strong commitment to youth development and/or out-of-school time education for the position of Afterschool Programs Group Leader to help deliver an engaging learning experience for participants (Pre-K through 8th Grade) in our afterschool programs.

ISS Afterschool Programs Group Leaders are an invaluable part of our team and work collaboratively with the program site team to create a youth-centered, interest-driven, enriched learning environment that allows students to pursue their curiosity and interests through meaningful learning experiences.

The ideal candidate is committed to nurturing children and youth through positive youth development and the whole-child approach. Previous experience working with children/youth in a group setting is required such as facilitating activities in schools,  afterschools, camps, and/or museums.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Responsible for day-to-day guidance, care, and safety of a group of children/youth in an afterschool environment.

Help and support students with their homework.

Plan, develop, and implement enrichment activities and/or theme-based projects that are engaging, purposeful, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with our program. These will include existing ISS-developed curricula and lesson ideas as well as group leader-developed activities. Guidance and assessment will be provided.

Demonstrate confidence, assertiveness, and a willingness to speak in front of a group of children. This includes the ability to engage with students, deliver instructions clearly, and facilitate group activities effectively.

Build and maintain positive relationships with youth participants of diverse backgrounds and needs.

Assist in mentoring assistant group leaders who are gaining experience working with children and youth.

Proactively communicate regularly with program site leadership staff about any issues, including but not limited to behavioral challenges, scheduling, and curricula.

Attend professional development and training sessions, as well as designated meetings, as required.

Ensure that afterschool youth programs align with the organization’s mission, values, and approach.

Qualifications and Skills:

Currently enrolled or some college; B.A./B.S. preferred.

Prior experience facilitating activities with children in a group setting is required.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Strong social-emotional competencies and behavior management skills.

Ability to problem solve and adapt quickly.

Willingness to receive feedback and be coached or trained.

Proficiency in Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, Fujianese) or Spanish, a plus.

Knowledge of and sensitivity to underserved immigrant and Asian American communities is a plus.

$17.00 – $19.00 per hour – depending on experience

AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS SITE SUPERVISOR (PART-TIME)

Immigrant Social Services, Inc. (ISS) seeks a dynamic and experienced part-time Afterschool Programs Site Supervisor.  The Site Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the afterschool program site including coaching and working with the Group Leader(s)/Group Assistant (s) and volunteers/interns to create a safe, caring and enriching environment for all children at all times. The Site Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that policies and licensing standards are met in regards to day-to day operations including maintaining up to date records, ensuring supervision policies are implemented, guiding the behavior of children, planning and delivering the weekly curriculum and managing staff.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Manage and supervise daily onsite program operations and implementation of quality learning experiences such as:

Maintain complete and thorough attendance of all students and staff each day. Check the school absentee list, site voicemail, and call parents if child(ren) are absent, but scheduled. Submit attendance rosters, schedule changes, licensing paperwork, payroll and other reports as requested. 

Ensure the safety of all children enrolled in the program by following the supervision standards in NYS OCFS SACC, DOHMH, DOE, and other regulatory agencies,

Maintain constant head counts when transitioning between different areas and activities. 

Ensure that only the authorized parent/guardian or emergency contact signs a child in/out of the program and include recording time. Return rosters to office administration weekly, signed and dated.

Follow protocols for dealing with First-Aid and emergency situations. Complete necessary paperwork such as incident reports, medical log, etc.

Use positive group management techniques. Anticipate and deal with behavior problems proactively.

Coach, guide and manage the day-to-day duties of group leaders/assistants/volunteers/interns. Provide overall support and supervision for site staff, coordinate and facilitate check-ins, observations, and evaluations.

Oversee and assigning responsibilities each day including leading activities, helping with snack, homework support, restroom supervision, and clean up as required. 

Ensure all staff function as positive role models and set a positive example through their behavior. 

Address any staff performance issues that affect the program with guidance from the Site Director. 

Provide specific input/feedback for group leaders/assistants for performance reviews.

Plan and implement a weekly curriculum incorporating the values of ISS.

Assist Site Director with promoting ISS program to families to reach enrollment targets.

Maintain a clean and sanitary program environment by ensuring supplies, equipment and tables are cleaned before and after snack or activities. Ensure children wash their hands before snack. Report any maintenance issues to the school custodians and the Site Director.

Lead monthly fire safety drill and log results to meet licensing requirements.

Complete all required trainings for compliance with DOHMH, OCFS, and OASAS. Attend all staff meetings as required.

Assist with planning and implementation of special events.

Maintain certifications as required. Must complete background check clearance and provide proof of a Mantoux test within two weeks of hire.

Perform other job-related duties as requested and necessary.

Qualification and Skills:

Bachelor’s Degree in education or related fields, or equivalent work experience.

Minimum of three years of relevant experience with elementary or middle school-age children in an afterschool program leading activities in a group setting.

At least two years of supervisory experience.

Experience adhering to licensing requirements.  

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels including staff, parents/families, and school staff. 

Ability to problem solve and make decisions that adhere to the purpose, mission and goals of ISS.

A self-starter with strong organizational, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and crisis management skills, capable of prioritizing and performing multiple tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge and sensitivity to the diverse perspectives inherent in working with Asian Americans/immigrants, communities of color, and low-income families.

Working knowledge of the DOE/public school system, out-of-school time programs and networks, nonprofit organizations, curriculum design and implementation, program evaluation and assessment, Asian American studies, and community development is helpful.

$20-$24 per hour, depending on education and experience.

Director of Finance and Operations

Immigrant Social Services, Inc. (ISS) seeks a Director of Finance and Operations to join our leadership team. This role is pivotal in ensuring the financial health and operational efficiency of our organization as we expand in scope and complexity. With the support of the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Operations will be responsible for developing, strengthening, and managing financial and administrative systems and practices that advance our mission and goals. ISS has an annual budget of approximately $1.8M and our five-level office and programs space is located in the Lower East Side, Manhattan.

The ideal candidate will possess expertise in nonprofit finance and operations, demonstrating resourcefulness and creative problem-solving skills. They will be the type of person who is willing to roll up their sleeves, appreciates the significance of both micro and macro-level strategic thinking, and thrives in a small dynamic nonprofit environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

Finance

Work with the Executive Director to develop and implement organizational budget and facilitate budgeting process with staff.

Manage and monitor budgets, cash flow, and financial records to align with our mission and ensure the organization’s financial health.

Prepare regular financial reports, highlighting key metrics, trends, and recommendations.

Oversee the financial aspects of grant applications, government contracts, reporting, and compliance, ensuring adherence to all financial requirements.

Establish, maintain, and regularly review financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets, maintain financial data integrity, and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Provide financial insights and analysis to support decision-making, effectively translating numbers into accessible narratives, communicate financial information to non-finance team members.

Operations & Administration

Oversee external vendors and contractors related to HR, payroll, banking, investments, insurance, audits, compliance, and IT.

Manage HR administrative functions, including maintaining accurate records, recruitment, hiring, onboarding, personnel policies, payroll, benefits administration, and employee relations, ensuring compliance with employment laws.

Manage the day-to-day of our physical office and programs space and technology, including office and equipment inventory, supplies, furniture, repairs and maintenance with support of multiple vendors and consultants.

Establish, maintain, and enhance internal systems, workflows, and policies to create efficiencies, foster innovation, and improve the overall experience for staff and stakeholders.

Proactively address operational issues and collaborate across teams to solve problems promptly and thoughtfully.

Qualifications and Skills:

A passion for Immigrant Social Services’ mission.

5+ years of relevant non-profit experience in financial and/or operations management.

Strong working knowledge of nonprofit finances and budgeting, grants and government contracts, audits, and compliance.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to implement quality control and best practices in financial, HR, facilities, and operations management.

Advanced proficiency in Excel and QuickBooks Online

Proven effectiveness in working with external vendors, contractors, and operational resources.

Independent, focused, self-directed, and detail-oriented.

Strong project management skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities effectively.

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Compensation: This is a full-time, exempt position with benefits. The salary range for this position is $75,000-$85,000 per year depending on experience and qualifications.
